David started in the wool industry in 1981 after completing a wool classing course at the Gordon wool school. He then commenced as a wool buyer for the company C.Itoh which at the time was the biggest wool exporter in Australia.

After 3 years David moved the family owned French company Vanlaine as a senior wool buyer and stayed in this position for 10 years until the collapse of the reserve price scheme which subsequently forced Vanlaine to close their wool division following the resulting heavy financial loss.

David then with former Vanlaine manager Michael Mitchell formed BYV.
